This year open enrollment lasts for six weeks instead of 12 weeks as in previous years. People who enroll during open enrollment will have coverage beginning Jan. 1, 2018. After Dec. 15, persons can enroll only if they qualify for a special enrollment period.
Machell said the Marketplace is ideal for self-employed persons and those whose employer doesn’t provide health insurance, who lost their coverage when laid off and those who have exhausted their COBRA benefits.
