Legal Aid Uplifts Veterans

Legal Aid Impacts a Veteran Couple
Here’s their story
An older married couple sought assistance from Legal Aid to file bankruptcy because they could not afford to pay all of their creditors. Both husband and wife served in the Navy during World War II, and so their case was assigned to a Legal Aid attorney dedicated solely to assisting Veteran clients.  The couple had never considered asking for help from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), despite their own financial difficulties and the costs incurred by their daughter as primary caretaker. Based on the information provided, Legal Aid’s attorney determined that the couple would qualify for VA pensions, as well as Aid and Attendance.  Both spouses were initially awarded $470/month in pension and back pay in the amount of $9,000.  After reviewing these amounts with the clients, Legal Aid’s attorney filed a Notice of Disagreement to help cover the care and loss of income incurred by the couple’s daughter. The VA interviewed the couple’s daughter and increased the monthly award to $1,200 for each client.  To help secure the couple’s estate, Legal Aid’s attorney also assisted in drafting wills and planning for the future.
