PRO BONO SELF-REFERRALS
A self-referred case is just what is sounds like. A case you, as a lawyer, have accepted for pro bono representation that did not originate from Legal Aid. You choose your pro bono case.
Why? Here are some of the benefits associated with representing pro bono clients as self-referrals:
-
Free access to www.probono.net/ok a membership web site with forms, and other resources for Oklahoma pro bono volunteers;
-
Malpractice insurance coverage on Legal Aid referred cases (if you have your own, ours is secondary);
-
Legal Aid staff attorneys available for consultation;
-
Legal materials are available including: library access, brief and pleading banks, pamphlets and video/audio tapes;
-
Assistance with litigation costs (must be pre-approved);
-
Fifty-percent discount on many OBA CLE programs for 20 hours or more of pro bono service;
-
Free Legal Aid seminars; and,
-
Interview rooms available for meetings with the client.
When a client who may qualify for assistance through Legal Aid contacts a lawyer directly, we invite you to call one of our pro bono coordinators for an eligibility screening. If the client meets the financial and other criteria, a pro bono file will be established at Legal Aid for monitoring and other support services just as if the client had originated with us. Self-referral of cases is the best way to provide legal services to the truly needy, because he or she has the lawyer of his choice without waiting for a referral.
